The modern separation of Africa into a “Mediterranean” North and a “Sub-Saharan” South had little basis in the historical geographies and political relationships of the pre-colonial period.
One thing I had no idea about until recently was just how much influence (and presence) the Ottoman Empire had south of the Sahara prior to the Italian conquest of Libya. The Turks were making quite serious inroads into Chad.
